Finding Relief After the Fight: Post-Cancer Hot Flash Support
I wrote this blog for a dear God given relative who is a cancer survivor and is currently experiencing hot flashes. Inspired by their journey, I decided to share this information with the world to support others on their wellness journey of recovery.
“Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.” – 3 John 1:2
Praise God for healing! After months or even years of treatment, many cancer survivors are declared cancer-free, what a miracle and a testimony of grace. But for some, the journey doesn’t end there. Unexpected symptoms like hot flashes, especially in men, can show up after treatment ends.
Whether you're a cancer survivor or caring for one, this blog is here to offer natural, faith-filled support to cool the body, comfort the spirit, and promote full wellness after the storm has passed.
Some Ask: Why Do Hot Flashes Happen After Cancer?
Hot flashes are often associated with women and menopause, but many men experience them too, especially after:
- Hormone therapy (often used in prostate cancer)
- Radiation
- Chemotherapy
- Surgery that affects hormone-producing glands
These treatments may reduce testosterone, affect the brain's temperature regulation, or simply leave the nervous system on high alert. Even after recovery, the body is still adjusting and healing.
Healthy Ways to Support the Body Naturally
These simple and nourishing strategies may help bring comfort and balance:
1. Magnesium: The Calming Mineral
Magnesium is known for:
- Calming the nervous system
- Supporting hormone regulation
- Easing muscle tension and promoting better sleep
Look for: Magnesium glycinate or citrate for best absorption.
Dosage: 200–400 mg daily (always check with your healthcare provider).
2. Cooling Herbs & Adaptogens
- Ashwagandha – Balances stress hormones and may support testosterone
- Maca Root – Can help promote stamina and hormone balance
- Holy Basil (Tulsi) – Cooling and anti-inflammatory
- Peppermint or Spearmint tea – Gentle and refreshing
Note: Always introduce herbs slowly and check for interactions with any medications.
3. Hydrate with Cooling Infusions
Try sipping:
- Cucumber mint water
- Aloe vera juice (1–2 oz in water)
- Fresh celery juice (up to 16 oz in the morning)
These support hydration and help cool the system from within.
4. Enjoy and Eat the Colors of Calm
Focus on:
- Leafy greens (spinach, kale)
- Cooling fruits (berries, apples, watermelon)
- Healthy fats (avocados, olive oil, nuts)
- Oats, quinoa, and wild rice for gentle energy
Avoid:
- Caffeine
- Spicy foods
- Alcohol
- Excess sugar
5. Practical Comfort at Work & Home
- Layer lightweight clothing
- Keep a cooling towel or neck wrap nearby
- Use portable cooling fans or discreet cold packs
- Try cooling wristbands made for athletes
Even if the room is cold, the body may still flash, so these tools can be a big help.
6. Spiritual & Emotional Peace
Hot flashes are also linked to the nervous system’s recovery. Gentle spiritual habits can restore peace:
- Deep breathing with prayer (Inhale “Lord, give me peace,” Exhale “I receive it now.”)
- Morning walks with gratitude
- Journaling victories from the cancer journey
- Worship moments throughout the day
- Operate in your gifts sing, dance whatever it may be
Hot flashes after cancer are real, but you are not alone, and you are not broken. There are natural ways to bring the body back into balance, one day at a time.
God heals not just the body, but the heart and mind, too.
You survived the storm. And now it’s time to walk in healing, restoration, and cool, calm peace.
